THE TRUTH
ASHTON
In my red truck, I pulled up outside the club, next to Daneâs beat-up hatchback.
âHey,â he said when I stepped out.
âHey. Thanks for putting in the favor with your boss. As embarrassing as it is, I really need to prove to my parents that Iâm not just a spoiled trust-fund kid and can make my own way in the world.â
âNot a problem,â he said, patting me on the back. âItâs what you have to do.â
And we walked toward the marina for the first day of my new job.
My new job was cleaning and repairing the yachts moored in the marina. It was laborious work but paid well. And would be a great way to get out of going to the city to work at my dadâs office over the summer.
âSo, I canât believe your dad agreed to this,â said Dane, helping me carry the heavy water hose down the long dock toward the first boat we were meant to clean that day.
I shrugged. âYeah. I kinda made a deal with him. If I worked here repairing other peopleâs yachts, it would be enough to satisfy the community order. Then I can still get my trust in a few years. Plus, I get to stay in Summervale for the summer. Win-win.â
Dane laughed. âI actually like cleaning yachts. Where do you think I got these puppies from?â he joked, flexing his biceps.
I threw a wet sponge at him. Instead, he sprayed me with his hose.
âHey,â said a pretty voice. We stopped messing around, and Dane cleared his throat. I turned to see Stacey standing on the dock behind me. âCan we please talk?â
âSure.â I dropped the sponge back in the bucket and followed her to further down the dock. We came to the railing, and she leaned against it looking out over the harbour.
âWhatâs up, babe?â I asked.
I wouldnât be a hot-blooded guy if I didnât check her out. She wore a red sundress, and her hair was down. I didnât know it was so long. And red. The sunlight shone through her hair, turning it fiery and golden like molten honey. She was so beautiful.
âI⦠itâs about that night last summer.â
I was confused. âYeah? What about it? it was a great night, wasnât it?â
âWhen we were together, yes. But you know how I ran off after that new girl kept pushing me about revealing my secrets during that stupid game?â
âTruth or dare? Yeah, I remember. That was uncalled for.â
âWell, when I ran off, I ran back to my old town, to Acacia Creek. I went to see my dad. And um⦠she followed me.â
âOkay⦠but I donât see what the big deal is. You just wanted to see your dad.â
âIt wasnât because I needed a hug from him. I went for an entirely different purpose.â
âOkay⦠why are you telling me this, Stace? Are you okay?â
âI have to tell you the truth because if I donât, youâll find out the wrong way, and I donât want you to hate me.â
I linked my fingers with hers.
